This transition into a new role and celebration of motherhood has an underlying brittleness. This moment is fragile: when Rosy was 7 months pregnant, she found out she had stage 4 bowel cancer. Following the diagnosis she had a bowel operation, an emergency C-section, and then a premature baby to look after; the next day she was starting chemotherapy in an attempt to control the spread of the cancer that had already moved to her liver. As photographer and subject we were trying to capture this moment while she stood on a cliff edge of her life. Baby Herb lies oblivious to the anxiety, while Rosy takes on more than she ever thought possible. This image encapsulates the growth of love, fear, understanding, human bonding and impending tragedy.
