On 8th November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Super Typhoon Yolanda, struck the Visayas group of islands in the Philippines. One of the strongest storms recorded, Haiyan killed an estimated 10,000 people. At the time, I worked for a disaster response organization and captured this image. As the sun shines through the smoke, the two figures walk quietly down towards the light — a stream of hope for the future. Growth often comes in the strangest circumstances.
