Bonham Rd, Hong Kong, 1989. The former British Dependent Territory undergoes rapid growth and expansion in the countdown to the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to mainland China. In this photograph, a local resident stands bemused and incredulous, hands behind his back as he observes the transformation of Sheung Wan district before his eyes. As a resident in this very same district in the late 1980s, I was aware that every week brought its share of demolition and construction. It was an exciting time to be a photographer in Hong Kong. Hong Kong currently tops the list of cities with the most skyscrapers.
